Description: For the last 4 years Helicopter has been playing around Southern California, working on their sound and show. With a mix of British & American rock/pop, Helicopter has a unique sound that audiences have been coming out to hear. In June 2009, the band went into the studio to record their first album. The material is diverse but cohesive with 3 singers and 4 songwriters on the album. It has the sound and songwriting talent of many of the great classic rock bands. From stadium rockers to beautiful ballads and everything in between, Helicopter’s debut album ‘Flight Risk’ has something for everyone
Helicopter is a Los Angeles rock band but the members came from all parts of the world to form the group.
Drummer Matthew Moore came to LA from New Zealand looking to start a band. Around the same time singer songwriter/guitarist Johnny Kempt had come to LA from New Zealand also looking to do the same thing. They had not known each other previously, but when they met in LA the chemistry seemed right so they started to form a group.
Matthew called another singer/guitarist Bruce Makabenta to join the band. They had played together for a year in another group so they knew each others playing well. Bruce had moved to the USA from the Philippines to pursue his music.
Johnny knew bass player Sam Correa from pick-up gigs around town and thought his style would be perfect for the band. Sam was born in Puerto Rico and moved to New York City when he was just a boy. He lived in Spanish Harlem for many years before deciding to take his music further and move to Los Angeles. After playing with Helicopter for 3 years Sam decided being in a full time band was not for him so bass player Francesco DiCosmo came onto the scene and joined the band in 2009. Francesco had been playing with Thin Lizzy, Jason Bonham, Ronnie Montrose and Evanescence before he joined Helicopter. Francesco and the band had met a few times on the road and there was always a great chemistry. So when Sam left he was the natural choice to take over on the bass.
New Jersey born singer songwriter/guitarist Stefano Capobianco had been touring the country for a year with a signed band. When the band broke up Stefano decided to move to LA and try a different scene. He’d met Johnny at a few singer songwriter nights around LA. Johnny asked Stefano if he’d be interested in joining the group when he heard him perform. The energy and connection was instant from the first rehearsal.
Helicopter had become a 5pce band with every member adding an important element. The next stage was to get out and play to audiences, which they have been doing successfully for the last 4 years, and there's no sign of Helicopter slowing down!
